Dezadeash River - Itinerary
Whitehorse to Dezadeash Lake
Meet your tour guide and group in the morning. After all gear is packed we drive along the Klondike Highway passed Haines Junction to the Dezadeash Campground where we set up camp for our first night. We use the opportunity and get acquainted with our canoe and paddle on Dezadeash Lake before we start our canoe tour the following day. In the evening we discuss the planned canoe route and answer last minute questions.
Canoe Dezadeash River
After breakfast we transfer to the headwater of the Dezadeash Lake, our launch point. Our canoe tour begins with the crossing of a bay and we paddle along the south bank to Six-Mile-Lake, the run off of the Dezaheash River. The shallow protected lake provides a perfect habitat for moose and is a great fishing destination for pike, trout and grayling. In this crystal clear water you often can see the fish right from the river bank. The wide bay also is an excellent place to spot wildlife in the evening. Here we camp for the night. The next morning we start paddling along the winding Dezadeash River until we reach a traditional meeting place of the Champagne First Nations, our camp for tonight.
Champagne to Whitehorse
The last leg takes us to Champagne. Further on the river winds its way along with sharp turns and high sands. The entire route is home to many waterfowls, otters, beavers and lynx. Champagne once was an important trading place along the route to Dawson City. During a walk you can see the old route of the stagecoaches and get a fantastic view of the Dezadeash River valley. In the late afternoon we return to Whitehorse.
