Hart River Canoe Adventure
Tucked between the rugged Ogilvie and Wernecke mountain ranges, the Hart river is the longest tributary of the Peel River watershed, which drains the northeastern Yukon Territory, including the Wind, Snake and Bonnet Plume rivers.
The Hart is named for Howard Hamilton Hart, a pre-Klondike gold prospector from Montana who came to the Yukon in the 1880s. The area is designated as the northern anchor of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, a bi-national conservation effort dedicated to protecting a 2,000-mile-long corridor of wildlands along the northern Rocky Mountains. The rivers were traditional areas used by the Gwich'in.
Experience
This Class II and III river is for intermediate paddlers.
Hart River Canoe Tour - Itinerary
Whitehorse to Mayo
Individual arrival in Whitehorse. After meeting your guide you will receive an introduction and details of the tour. We start our drive from Whitehorse to Mayo where we set up camp for the first night.
Mayo to Hart River
In the morning we fly by floatplane to Elliot Lake. From there enjoy the Helicopter portage to our launch point at the Hart river.
Canoe the Hart River
The Hart river, along with its contemporaries, the Wind, Snake and Blackstone, promises a spectacular journey through the remote and rugged mountain ranges which make up the southern part of the Peel River watershed. Seldom travelled, the Hart river valley is home to moose, sheep, and bears and holds a special place in the human history of the region. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery with high mountains which, in places, come right down its banks. Several tough sections make it unsuitable for beginners, but most of the river is pretty easy paddling, with plenty of time to relax and soak up the incredible nature. The Hart river is great for grayling fishing and the hiking is superb.
Return to Whitehorse
From our Rendezvous Point we will fly by floatplane back to Mayo. There we will be met by our van and travel the Klondike Highway back to Whitehorse. Overnight in Whitehorse. In the evening we gather at a local eatery (not included) to celebrate the return and recount tales of the adventure!
