About Icefield Discovery Camp
The Icefield camp, a series of insulated Quonset-style huts that is open during the Arctic summer from early May to late August, is perched at 2,600 metres on a glacial plateau about 180 kilometres west of the Alaska Highway. Situated about 25 kilometres east of Mount Logan with a tremendous view.
The camp is located at 8,500 feet above sea level on the Kaskawalsh Glacier in the heart of the Kluane National Park, long considered one of the most inaccessible regions of the earth. You depart from Silver City, located 65 km north of Haines Junction for a 45-minute flight through spectacular scenery to the Kaskawalsh Glacier.
From the landing strip you walk for about 30 minutes on kilometer thick glacier ice to the camp, located on a gentle snowfield that overlooks the major glaciers and peaks of the Saint Elias range. For overnight trips guests are outfitted with appropriate icefield clothing and accommodated in well heated polar buildings with insulated floors. With today’s technology guests enjoy solar power, hot showers, toilet facilities, full kitchen, dining room, delicious meals, a recreations area and a scientific library. Activities offered at the camp include orientation and safety briefings, local walks and ski trips, participating in and helping to maintain the scientific programs of observations, photography, sketching, snoozing in the sun and admiring the outstanding views.
Guest numbers is limited to a maximum of twelve at any one time. Weather conditions vary between warm, sunny days with temperatures as high as +15 C, to the possibility of high winds, blowing snow and temperatures dropping to -15 C at night.
