Tuktut Nogait offers unprecedented opportunities for backcountry enthusiasts to experience the arctic. The expansive, open landscape is ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing. It consists largely of vast expanses of tundra, broadly rolling uplands and lowlands, deep canyons, stunning waterfalls and crystal clear rivers.
A wide variety of mammals are found in the park, including caribou, muskoxen, grizzly bears, wolves, red foxes, wolverines, arctic ground squirrels and collared lemmings. The park encompasses most of the core calving, and post-calving grounds of the Bluenose West caribou herd.
Tuktut Nogait is a major breeding and nesting ground for a wide variety of migratory birds. Raptors such as peregrine falcons, rough legged hawks, gyrfalcons and golden eagles nest along the steep walls of the river canyons.
Evidence of Tuktut Nogait’s rich cultural history is widespread. Visitors have a good chance of encountering some of these sites, especially when travelling along the river corridors. Tent rings, caches, rock alignments, meat drying areas and hunting blinds can all be observed.

Day 02-08
Our plan is to follow the Hornaday River and valley north towards the Arctic Ocean. We have factored in a couple of layover days where we can explore the rich natural scape at leisure. There will be many highlights during our hike. LaRonciere Falls is one of the most spectacular, over 20 m high. Canyon walls, interesting rock formations, waterfalls, rapids, tundra, beautiful clear lakes, rivers and creeks, meadows with wildflowers will all form part of our exploration. The park features endless breathtaking vistas and photograhic opportunities.
