Designed for wildlife / nature photographers & enthusiasts - will utilize vans, dog teams and snow machines to spend a week on the land and frozen waters along Great Slave Lake. and a journey north of Yellowknife along the winter ice roads to see the tundra, the caribou herds; the best possible exposure to northern lights as only the depth of true wilderness can bring - and to see from a distance an active Diamond Mine!
Day
Itinerary
01
We will spend a day based from Yellowknife to browse the local museum, the Legislative Assembly and local shops, and to undertake a dog sled tour on Great Slave Lake. We will try our hand at ice fishing, and get a taste of the 'old mode' of Arctic travel & survival! The day completes with our first evening of campfire & northern lights watch - with dinner & accommodations in Yellowknife included.
02
The following day we will commence on a van journey 200+ km up the famous Contwoyto winter ice road to the north of Yellowknife to visit the frozen waterfalls of the Cameron River, and then northward towards the treeline. Further up the road on this epic drive, we expect to encounter barrenground caribou herds on the ice of the frozen lakes, & possibly see wild wolves coming in to hunt the caribou!
03-04
We will overnight and dine at comfortable Mackay Lake Lodge lon the edge of the Arctic tundra for two nights, while exploring the surrounding environs by van and snow machines for wildlife, & natural history interpretations. If conditions allow, the trip will continue further up the ice road to see an active diamond mine ouot on the land before heading back to Yellowknife.
05
We will then return back to Yellowknife for a night, with dinner and accommodations included - and with more time to visit local craft shops.
06
The next morning, we will again depart on a 100-250 km van drive along the western shores of Great Slave Lake, through the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary, in search of the elusive wood bison, moose, timber wolves & woodland caribou in their natural habitat.
Accompanied by one of our qualified wildlife trip leaders, we will overnight in traditional trapping cabin, cook over an open fire, and settle in to watch the the northern lights on our final night in the wilderness. And, through it all we will foray out into the clear Arctic nights, build campfires, and settle in to watch and photograph the incredible displays of northern lights!
